Client Feature! An Interview with Jane Deterding

Jane’s first Pilates lesson was with Kimberly on March 3, 2023. Since her first lesson, Jane has been a committed and diligent Pilates student! She has a home in Colorado where she spends her summer, but she faithfully continued taking lessons via zoom. Jane is inspirational, and we hope you enjoy reading more about her!

Q: What is your favorite exercise?

A: I’m terrible at remembering the names of the exercises – and I tend to give them different names than the “proper” names. I love all the stretchy exercises – especially back stretches!

Q: What is your favorite piece of equipment?
A: The Cadillac

Q: What is it you like about Pilates?

A: Pilates is for thinkers, at least that’s my position. Shortly after I started Pilates with Kimberly, I told my husband “I think I’ve found my thing!” The mind-body connection makes Pilates very rewarding for me.

Q: Has Pilates helped you achieve your health/fitness goals?

A: I am definitely on my way! Improved strength, balance, and posture are some of the benefits I see already.

Q: How has Pilates helped you in your everyday life?

A: I’m a klutz by nature. Improved balance definitely helps me be less klutzy! Also, the arthritis in my knees is so much better!

Q: What do you like about doing Pilates in a Duo with your friend?

A: Thanks to my friend Sheryl Wohlford, I was introduced to Today Pilates. We now share her Tuesday/Thursday noon slot. It’s great seeing my friend twice a week and encouraging each other. And laughing. A lot!

Q: Why did you start wanting to lose weight?

A: It was time. I was finding myself struggling to keep up with my husband in very basic activities. I had already had a hip replacement and knew I would be looking at other joint replacements if I didn’t lose weight. I started the journey just as Covid hit – some people think that’s crazy, but we lost the ability to go to restaurants so eating “right” at home was much easier.

Q: What methods did you primarily use to lose weight?

A: Primarily, I used an app called Noom when I started. The lessons and logging meals really helped me stay on track. I have since completed the Noom program, and I now use a different app called My Fitness Pal to log meals.

Q: How has Pilates affected your weight loss journey?

A: Pilates has been a very nice companion to my weight loss journey as I try to tighten up loose places!

Q: How has your weight loss affected your daily life?

A: Where do I begin…? I can do more in daily life! From keeping up with my fast-walking husband at Sam’s Club to taking hikes in Colorado (pictured above). I just feel better in my body!

Q: What advice would you give to people looking to lose weight?

A: Everyone has their own path. Everyone has their own motivation or goals to achieve. My one piece of advice: log what you eat (either on an app or in a journal), and drink lots of water. I’m 80 lbs lighter since I started my weight loss journey, and I have more to go. It’s a marathon not a sprint!

Q: What advice would you give to people looking to start Pilates?

A: Just try it! Being skeptical is okay, but take the free consultation with someone at Today Pilates and just try. Especially if you’re a thinker like me!
