From Pain to Possibility: Matthew’s 10-Year Journey with Today Pilates

At Today Pilates, we’re celebrating ten incredible years of helping clients transform their lives—and we can’t think of a better way to mark this milestone than by spotlighting one of our most inspiring longtime clients: Matthew Penner.

This isn’t just a client spotlight. It’s a story of healing and hope—exactly what we believe Pilates can unlock when you’re consistent, coachable, and committed.

Meet Matthew: A Story of Strength and Staying Power

Matthew began his Pilates journey on July 15, 2015, with a single goal: get out of pain. At just 39 years old, standing for long periods was a struggle due to chronic issues in his back, hips, and feet. Though he originally planned to attend for just six months, something shifted.

“When I started, I thought I’d do this for about six months! Little did I know the road to be travelled…”

Rebuilding—One Move at a Time

Matthew’s journey wasn’t about quick fixes. It was about faithful movement, session after session, and a willingness to take baby steps forward. With consistent sessions twice a week (yes—every week for 10 years!), Matthew slowly began rebuilding his strength. The changes weren’t overnight—but step by step, he noticed reduced pain and improved mobility.

Through Pilates and chiropractic support from Dr. Zollinger, Matthew’s body began to respond. In 2019, he accomplished a major milestone: a 100-mile bike ride—proof that his body was growing stronger.

That ride sparked a bigger dream: “50 at 50”—running 50 miles around his 50th birthday in 2026. It’s hard to believe—but the same man who once couldn’t stand without pain is now lacing up to run fifty miles. That’s the power of persistence, Pilates, and a dream team who support you.

Building a Home Practice and a Dream Team

When Matthew moved to Hillsboro in 2021, the journey didn’t stop. Kimberly helped him create a home Pilates space—piece by piece, adding equipment like a Low Chair, Tower/Mat, and other essentials. Virtual sessions kept his practice consistent, and the addition of this home setup allowed him to deepen his work.

Over the past year, Matthew incorporated regular “homework”—independent Pilates, strength training, and balance work with tools like the Mobo board. He’s built a full support team: a running coach, a strength coach, and, of course, Today Pilates.

Looking Ahead to the 50-Mile Finish Line

Matthew’s preparing for his first marathon this fall and a 50-mile ultramarathon in 2026. With a renewed mindset and a resilient body, he’s proof that transformation is possible—with patience, persistence, and the right people around you.

So, What’s the Secret?

There isn’t one. No magic pill. No overnight hack. Just:

  • Consistent movement
  • Expert coaching
  • A belief that change is possible
  • And a team that’s cheering you on—every step of the way

“Today Pilates and Kimberly have been beside me all the way. Kimberly has always had confidence that healing and strength were indeed possible.”

Cheers to 10 years, Matthew—and thank you for showing us what commitment truly looks like.

Ten Years of Today Pilates—and Stories Like This Are Why We Do It

Matthew’s journey reminds us that Pilates isn’t just about posture or core strength (although those are great too). It’s about restoration, resilience, and reimagining what your body is capable of.

We’re honored to be part of Matthew’s story—and if you’re reading this wondering whether change is possible for you, let us say this clearly: Yes. It absolutely is.

Here’s to 10 more years of healing, strength, and big dreams. Let’s go!

Big changes start with one small step. Reach out to Today Pilates and let’s take the first step—together.
